Shelley came to Honduras hoping for rest after a season of grief. Instead, God used her as a blessing to children eager to learn.
Some kids arrived an hour early—afraid to miss their chance—because they couldn’t yet tell time. Their faces lit up as they discovered the joy of learning and the simple gift of taking a book home.
✍️ Story
God blessed us in a special way this year by sending Shelley, a retired teacher who speaks fluent Spanish. She came to Tela hoping for rest and renewal after a season of grief, but God had more in store for her.
During her stay, Shelley offered to help some of the children in our community who were struggling in school. Many of these kids are far behind in their studies, not because they lack interest or ability, but because of the challenges they face in the local education system.
When word spread that tutoring was available, children began showing up—even during their school vacation. Some arrived more than an hour early and waited quietly, afraid they might miss their turn. One little boy told us he couldn’t tell time, so he came early “just in case.” Moments like that reveal both the need and the incredible desire to learn that these children carry in their hearts.
It was beautiful to see how quickly they connected with Shelley. The room was filled with laughter, curiosity, and joy. Their faces lit up as they grasped new ideas, sounding out words and discovering meaning on the pages before them.
For many of these children, simply holding a picture book was a rare experience. When they were told they could take a book home, their excitement was contagious. It wasn’t just about reading—it was about being seen, encouraged, and given hope.
Shelley thought she had come to Honduras to rest. Instead, she became a vessel of God’s love—using her gifts to lift others, reminding us that even in seasons of loss, God can still use us to bring light to others.
